Abstract | The overall aim of the research which informs this report is to examine the extent to which the learning needs of older people are understood and addressed within the adult and community education sector, and to explore how adult educators can be supported to develop innovative approaches and processes which engage older people in learning and strengthen their voice in relation to their right to learn. The research has six main objectives: (1) To map the current extent of provision of learning opportunities for older people in the adult and community education sector; (2) To consult with older adults to elicit their views on their own learning needs; (3) To document some examples of best practice; (4) To identify innovative ways in which adult and community education providers can address the learning needs of older adults; (5) To explore the possibility of establishing an older learners' network; and (6) To disseminate the findings of the research. This report locates the discussion on the lifelong learning needs of older people within the context of existing service provision. It identifies the specific learning requirements of older people, the supports needed to ensure older people's involvement in adult and community education and the current gaps in service provision. Finally the report offers some recommendations to address the future lifelong learning needs of older people. Appended are: (1) Survey Monkey Questionnaire; (2) ARI AGM Questionnaire; (3) Focus Group Topic Guide; (4) Template for Interviews; (5) Case Study Template; and (6) Older Learner's Network Flier. A bibliography is included. (Contains 9 figures, 1 table and 69 footnotes.) (ERIC). |
