AbstractResearch has shown that low graduation rates are a problem in high schools across the United States. The problem is significant at a small, inner-city charter high school in a southwestern US state that had a 2008 graduation rate of 34%. After assessing the situation, educators at this school developed the Credit Retrieval Program (CRP) to help students who have fallen behind to gain sufficient credits to graduate with a high school diploma. The participation-identification model of school engagement was used as the theoretical foundation for the development of the CRP. For this project study, the program evaluation relied on an intrinsic case study research design, including student interviews, observations, and document reviews to provide formative information about how and in what ways CRP helps students achieve. Data were analyzed using the responsive interviewing model. Research questions focused on students' feelings and perceptions based upon program participation. Findings from this program evaluation included the themes of (a) re-engagement of students in a high school setting in order to earn a diploma, and (b) a community with high school graduate role models. Implications for positive social change include retaining more students in high school and thus increasing high school graduation rates.
