AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate the effective beliefs and practices of successful principals at high schools with a Hispanic population of at least 30%. Eight highly effective high school principals who excelled in their leadership of schools were interviewed. Each met the following criteria: They must have been employed in the Texas public high school at least two of the three previous years; they must have achieved a rating of Recognized or Exemplary on the state accountability system during two of the three previous years; and the school population must have a Hispanic enrollment of at least 30%. All interviews were electronically recorded and transcribed. Common themes were identified through the analyses. The findings from this study emphasized that successful principals are committed to serving all students regardless of their race or ethnicity; successful principals maintain an atmosphere where high standards and expectations are common place; successful principals build effective relationships with staff members and students; successful principals recognize when change is necessary and utilize the change process to effectively implement changes; successful principals demonstrate an inner passion that drives what they do in their quest to serve students. This information may help principals better meet the needs of all students. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
