AbstractThe purpose of this study is to determine how behavioral symptoms of inattention predict rapid automatized naming (RAN) performance and reading skills in typically developing children. Participants included 104 third- and fourth-grade children from different elementary schools in mid-Michigan. RAN performance was assessed using the four Rapid Naming subtests from the CTOPP. Oral reading fluency and comprehension were assessed using the GORT-IV, and inattention was assessed using the SNAP-IV rating scale. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that all four RAN stimuli, particularly letter RAN, predicted reading fluency and comprehension. Ratings of inattention predicted RAN performance and reading fluency, but not comprehension after controlling for age, gender, ethnicity, working memory and estimated IQ. After controlling for RAN performance, overall inattention did not significantly predict reading skills. Further analyses suggest that RAN performance mediated the relation between inattention and reading skills. Findings highlight the need to recognize the influence of phonological awareness, RAN, and attention when understanding typical reading development.
