AbstractThe qualitative case study explored teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward counseling services and alternative programs for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. The study was driven by four research questions that attempt to capture the teachers' attitudes toward and perceptions of counseling for high school students with emotional and behavioral disabilities; understand the dynamics of group counseling as a related service to improve academic performance and likelihood of graduation; the perceptions of alternative programs such as IAR and REPO and the teachers' views. The literature review provided a theoretical framework for the different aspects affecting the education of students with disabilities. It presented a review of current services, characteristics of this population of students, literature on counseling services, alternative programs and current legislation affecting this population of students. Teachers from Northeast Wisconsin, who provided counseling services and taught in alternative programs, were recruited for participation in the study. The qualitative case study used focus group sessions and individual interviews as the data collection methodology. The results suggested that counseling is an effective method of educating students with disabilities that allows them to gain social, communication, and problem solving skills. Teachers reported alternative programs as being successful in assuring the high school graduation of this population of students. Alternative programs were found successful when they followed untraditional graduation requirements. Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities who received such services gained confidence, academic success and ameliorated their relationships.
