AbstractThe purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of women donors who had given a significant gift to a large Midwestern university. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 women donor participants that were not alumni, not married to alumni and had no children attending the selected university. These participants ranged from ages 52 to 95 and were found to be of middle to upper social economic status. The Revised Theory of Planned Behavior was applied for interpretation of interviews. Results indicated seven themes that emerged from the investigation: the meaning and importance of volunteerism, philanthropy defined, experience giving to institutions of higher education, acknowledgement of gifts, giving patterns to other charitable organizations, discussions with other women about being a donor and differences in giving patterns between men and women. Recommendations from this study for higher education development are to increase the awareness that donors are not just men or alumni. Women attend college at higher rates, have impacted the workforce, earn increasingly higher incomes, and often outlive men. Women are acquiring more wealth and are in charge of their own finances which will be the next force of donors to higher education. Women that are traditionally unconnected to the university may still connect to the institution and become a future donor. Injunctive, descriptive and moral norms can be a strong predictor of intentions to donate to an institution of higher education. Behavioral intention will occur prior to the individual making the gift. It is imperative that basic fundraising principles are understood by faculty, administrative leaders and the university community in collaboration with the development department. The significance of one relationship with one person from the university has the capability of creating a favorable attitude toward the university and a prospective donor becoming a sustaining donor.
