AbstractThe philosophies and behaviors of a leader constitute his or her leadership style. Historically, studies of educational leadership have focused on the philosophies and behaviors of white males. Over the past forty years, there have been a number of studies conducted that seek to identify differences between male and female leadership styles. However, there have been relatively few studies of minority leaders and even fewer that specifically address the intersection of race and gender. This study addresses a gap in the literature by providing a quantitative assessment of the educational leadership behaviors of African-American women, as compared to African-American men, Caucasian women, and Caucasian men. Results indicate that African-American and female principals are more likely to consistently use the strategies and manifest the attributes of Transformational Leadership than their Caucasian and male counterparts. African-Americans are also more inclined to consistently use or avoid Transactional and Laissez-Faire leadership styles, while women are more likely to consistently use one particular Transactional style--Contingent-Reward--and to avoid using both the Active and Passive Management-by-Exception styles altogether. Caucasian and male leadership styles and attributes, by contrast, are less consistently manifested. Years of job experience was also examined as a mediating variable, and study results indicate that the relationship between leadership styles and years of experience is less clear, though there is a moderate increase in the use of Transformational leadership approaches with greater experience.
