Abstract | This study represents a review of the literature along with an analysis of secondary data. The study analyzes and highlights the disparities in the quality of education provided to African American males. High school graduation rates among African American males as compared to other races suggest that there are factors that have created such inequities among the educational experience of the African American male. In conducting an exhaustive review of a secondary database analysis to locate and determine some of the disparities in treatment of African American males as compared to other races the researcher limited the range of materials to include: (1) studies that report the high rates of suspension of African American males as compared to other races; (2) studies that report the high rates of expulsion among African American males as compared to other races; (3) studies that review the overrepresentation of African American males enrolled in special education classes as compared to other races and (4) the underrepresentation of African American males enrolled in Advanced Placement classes as compared to other races. The research indicates the degree of inequity between racial groups and illustrates the degree of effectiveness of the education of African American boys. Educational attainment was measured by illustrating the differences in states graduation rates of the African American male population as compared to other races and finally a concluding section summarized the previous sections and suggested some directions for change. These included recommended programs and ideas regarding the central features of certain culturally derived behaviors that can help promote prosocial behaviors among African Americans.
