Abstract | The highways and byways, or career paths, to the Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) position differ based on a variety of variables. This study examined several variables including the induction or graduate preparation process, professional pathways, and professional and academic involvement of more than half of current land grant SSAOs. Data for the study were collected through a content examination of their curriculum vitae. Study findings provide an initial baseline with regard to data on those variables examined in the present study for those employed as SSAOs or those aspiring to become SSAOs, and include years in the profession prior to assuming an SSAO position, participation and leadership in professional associations, publication and teaching, and career progression. Other variables included in the study were highest academic degree earned, discipline of terminal degree, initial placement in student affairs, and professional experiences outside of higher education.
