AbstractSome of the questions most frequently asked of the North Dakota University System relate to the status of graduates and program completers of state educational institutions. Follow-up Information on North Dakota Education and Training (FINDET) is a consortium of several state agencies formed to provide answers to those questions. This report, based on FINDET data, describes the employment status of 2004 University System graduates who were employed in the state one year after graduation. Highlights of the report include: (1) Approximately 59 percent of all 2004 graduates were either employed in North Dakota or re-enrolled in North Dakota colleges or universities one year after graduation; (2) A higher portion (71.8 percent) of students who had graduated from North Dakota high schools remained in the state after college graduation; (3) In addition to the North Dakota residents who graduated from an NDUS institution, a significant portion of the 2004 graduates from surrounding states also remained in North Dakota following graduation; (4) A high proportion of programs retained significant percentages of their graduates in the state; (5) Graduates of NDUS institutions make significant contributions, not only to the private sector workforce, but also to local government, including school districts and state government; (6) NDUS graduates at all levels earned a median monthly full-time wage of $2,339 one year after graduation, nearly equal to the state median for all wage earners, even though it represents only the beginning of the income-earning phase for most graduates; and (7) There is a direct relationship between level of education and earnings, and also by area of study. These statistics dispel a common myth that the majority of North Dakota University System graduates leave the state after graduation: not only do a majority of all NDUS graduates remain in North Dakota, but almost two-thirds of students who had graduated from North Dakota high schools stay as well. The data also show that NDUS graduates are gainfully employed and that non-residents who remain in the state after graduation make a significant contribution to North Dakota's workforce. Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) tables and Methodological Notes are appended. (Contains 3 footnotes, 26 figures and 37 tables.) (ERIC).
