Abstract | Three years ago, the staff at Bethel (Connecticut) Middle School made a commitment to establish the school as a professional learning community (PLC). As they delved into the PLC concept, they realized that the first step was to take a close look at how they used time during the school day. Specifically, they needed to determine how to best address the academic and personal needs of their students, yet give teachers time during the school day to meet in PLC groups. Faculty were asked to answer two questions: (1) What do you like about the current schedule?; and (2) What would be included in your "ideal" schedule? The staff then developed a modified block schedule that allowed them the flexibility of having eight blocks of instruction during the school day, as well as two days of only odd-numbered classes and another day of only even-number classes. This article describes the details of the new schedule and discusses its increased ability to meet students' needs while allowing teachers to conduct efficient and focused PLC meetings.
