Abstract | Unlike traditional Readers Theatre, which is typically limited to literature-based scripts, Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre (CBRT) allows teachers and students to create scripts based on any topic, any work of literature, any textbook, or almost any collection of facts. It can be easily incorporated into the existing curriculum, and because this method emphasizes spoken words and gestures, not staged action, no theatrical training or background is necessary. The author's approach is clear and straightforward, and the following special features make this already practical resource even more accessible: (1) Reproducible sample scripts spanning a range of topics and content areas; (2) Script templates to aid scriptwriting; (3) "CBRT in Action" sections describing students' and teachers' firsthand experiences; and (4) Easy-to-use instructions on computer formatting scripts. After the preface, this book contains five chapters: (1) Understanding Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre; (2) Beginning Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre; (3) Collaborating With Students on an Original Script; (4) Involving Students in Independent Scriptwriting; and (5) Staging a Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre Performance. This book also contains an epilogue followed by three appendices: (1) Sample Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre Scripts; (2) Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre Script Templates; and (3) Computer-Formatting the Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre Script. Concluded is a list of references and an index. (ERIC). |
