AbstractThis guide begins with a story about the parents of twin kindergartners. The story models ways in which the parents of Mike and Chris help them learn to read, such as reading the newspaper together with them and asking them questions about the books they are reading. Included is another short story parents can read with their child, and a list of suggested questions parents might ask about the story as they read it together with their child. The questions could easily be adapted to almost any story parents would read with their children such as, "What do you think the main character in this story was feeling?" or "What do you think we can tell about this book by looking at the cover?" Meanings of new words from a story can also present opportunities for lively discussion with early readers, as can thinking of words that would rhyme or have opposite meanings. All of these are activities that could present parents with new ideas for spending creative, quality time while building their child's reading and vocabulary skills. The check list provided on the back page will help parents design creative activities for future reading sessions with their child.
