AbstractThis is the third volume of International Perspectives on Higher Education Research, a series which aims to feature something of the variety of research being undertaken into higher education systems and issues outside of North America. The theme of this volume is International Relations, or how students, academics, universities and higher education systems relate to each other across international borders. The book deliberately sets out to convey a diversity of ideas and approaches. Thus, it includes contributions from researchers working in Australia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom; examples of quantitative and qualitative strategies for data collection and analysis; and methodological approaches ranging from historical and policy analysis to self reflection. What is being considered under the theme of International Relations has also been kept deliberately broad. Thus, the eleven chapters in the book examine the movement across borders and between systems of not only students and academics, but also policies and ideas. This book starts with an Introduction (M. Tight) and consists of the following eleven chapters: (1) Explaining Domestic Responses to European Policies: The Impact of the Erasmus Programme on National Higher Education Policies (J. Huisman, A. Luijten-Lub, and M. Van Der Wende); (2) Student Mobility in Europe: An Academic, Cultural and Mental Journey? Some Conceptual Reflections and Empirical Findings (V. Papatsiba); (3) Researching the Benefits of Residence Abroad for Students of Modern Foreign Languages (J. Rees and J. Klapper); (4) Living up to Expectations: A Survey of International Students' Concerns and Their Perceptions of Change on a UK Departmental Pre-Sessional Programme (J. Lamie and S. Issitt); (5) Politicising Student Difference: The Muslim Experience (C. Asmar); (6) Academic Migration: The Case of New Australian Universities (A. Potts); (7) Voice and Academic Identity in "Changing Places" (J. Parker); (8) Internationalisation of Australian Higher Education (G. Harman); (9) Monitoring the Internationalisation of Higher Education: Are There Useful Quantitative Performance Indicators? (K-L. Krause, H. Coates, and R. James); (10) The Impact of the Implementation of Neo-Liberal Policies in Tertiary Education in Mexico (L. Russell); and (11) Re-Writing History: The University of London as Global Institution in the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries (M. Tight). (ERIC).
