Abstract | Goal 9 of twelve Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Challenge to Lead goals is that every school regardless of its student population, location or surrounding economic circumstances has a leader who can work with faculty to increase student learning. This report discusses progress toward this goal since 2002 in the 16 SREB states. It also is a guide for measuring development programs to: (1) determine if the system needs to be redesigned, (2) understand what should be done to build a better system, (3) determine if a state has made progress, (4) learn about promising practices used by other states and (5) identify challenges a state may face in redesigning its system. A checklist is provided for assessing progress in the development of principals with regard to recruiting, coursework, licensure, and professional development. Includes five tables illustrating state statistics. Appendices include a scoring guide, a description of the rating process, and a description of SREB training modules. (ERIC). |
