AbstractThis document presents practical guidelines for evaluating community-based adult leaning projects in the United Kingdom to document their impacts. The guide provides frameworks, terms of reference, examples of methods used by community-based projects, ways of demonstrating project impact, and a range of evaluation tools. Sections 1 through 10 discuss the following topics: the purposes of evaluation; key concepts in evaluation; getting starting and planning the evaluation process; internal monitoring; external monitoring; evaluation approaches and tools; making a difference; qualitative indicators; building in sustainability; and spreading the word. The following are among the 10 essentials of facilitating good evaluation practice that are listed in Section 11: (1) agree on the evaluation's purpose; (2) include evaluation in the project budget; (3) consider what can be achieved through internal monitoring and evaluation and how an external monitor can best complement that activity; (4) ensure the terms of reference given to the evaluator will support the project's development; (5) agree on milestones with the evaluator so that interim reports contribute to ongoing project reviews; and (6) treat evaluation reports as living documents for the project team and other stakeholders to exploit as valuable resources. A brief glossary and list of suggestions for further reading, resources, and World Wide websites are included. (MN)
