Abstract | The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Africa funded a study to understand how government, donor, nongovernmental organization (NGO), and civil society representatives view the increasing role of NGOs in basic education in Africa. The study was carried out in Ethiopia, Guinea, Malawi, and Mali by the Support for Analysis and Research in Africa (SARA) Project and American Institutes for Research (AIR). Through literature reviews, field visits, and interviews, the study examined NGO interactions with donors and governments, as well as the role of NGOs in education policy and in civil society. Findings suggest factors in all these areas that should be considered to ensure that NGOs contribute most effectively to education development on the continent. (BT) |
