Abstract | This book presents step-by-step guidelines to getting a job. The following are among the topics discussed in the book's 13 chapters: (1) assessing one's salable skills (identifying likes and dislikes, determining strong and weak points, assessing skills and knowledge, identifying areas for improvement); (2) identifying one's ideal job (describing the ideal job, writing 10-year goals); (3) gathering information (developing a networking list, compiling a company list, looking locally and in other areas); (4) creating a winning resume (making a personal information list, writing a resume, preparing a final version of the resume); (5) writing a cover letter (format and content considerations); (6) identifying, requesting, and furnishing references; (7) using want ads and employment agencies (answering ads by phone, in person, and by letter; employment agencies and temporary work); (8) networking and making direct contacts (networking, networking meetings, target letters and direct contacts, phone calls, letters); (9) staying organized (keeping records, making a weekly job search plan); (10) completing an application form (tips for completing applications, illegal questions); (11) interviewing for the job (basic guidelines, dealing with difficult questions, common interview mistakes); (12) getting the best pay and conditions; and (13) succeeding at a new job.
