AbstractCentering around the theme of work, this book offers activity ideas based on children's literature from best-selling authors. Through learning extensions in the book, young readers in grades 1-6 will gain insight into a variety of occupations and work environments and, in a playful way, learn about the skills needed to succeed. The stories and hands-on activities in the book offer a "fresh approach" to helping children grasp the concepts covered in each unit. Organized into three main sections based on particular aspects of the world of work, the first part of the book focuses on the economy with chapters based on "Albert's Field Trip" and "The Milkman's Boy." The second part shines the light on work skills, discussing books such as "So You Want to Be President" and "Mommy's Office," while the third part features work communities with units "Raising Yoder's Barn" and "Worksong." Each of the book's 23 units includes a suggested children's book, a brief summary, the theme, content-related words, and a compilation of activities that can be integrated into all areas of the curriculum. The book's lessons include reproducible worksheets and graphics such as patterns, word search and crossword puzzles, maps, and time lines--teachers are supplied with many suggestions for teaching language arts, science, math, social studies, art, and music, as well as library and computer skills. In addition, through literature, important concepts and role models are presented that help children think about teamwork, cooperative learning, and economic issues. (NKA)
