| Abstract | This book discusses basic craft elements of writing, illustrates from adult and children's literature what constitutes an engaging passage of description, and then illustrates how that craft can be taught in a workshop environment. In addition, this book includes involvement experiences that help teachers experience these craft elements. After an introduction, the chapters in the book, each of which describes a workshop, are: (1) Getting Started: Anyone Can Write; (2) Keeping a Writer's Notebook: Playing with Prose and Poetry; (3) Freewriting: Silencing Our Internal Editors; (4) Show, Don't Tell: Painting Pictures with Words; (5) The Power of Verbs: Transforming Lifeless Prose; (6) Crafting Engaging Leads: Great Beginnings for Good Writing; (7) Writing Dialogue: Putting Readers into the Story; (8) Read Like a Writer: Learning to Write from the Authors You Love; (9) Developing Voice: Every Writer's Uniqueness; and (10) Writing Expository Text: It's Easier Than You Think.
