AbstractApproximately ten percent of the population suffers from a depressive illness each year. Although the economic cost is high, the cost in human suffering is immeasurable. To help educate the population about this disorder, this paper presents a definition of depression and its common manifestations. The symptoms that people often experience are described. Depression in women is twice as common than in men, but people of all ages are susceptible. Stress, a family history, low self-esteem, and physical changes in the body can bring on depression. The first step for getting appropriate treatment for depression is a physical examination by a physician. Depending on the outcome of that visit, treatment can involve a combination of psychotherapy, medications, or if persistent, electroconvulsive treatment. The medications commonly used are explained along with their possible side-effects. Suggestions are presented on how family and friends can help the depressed person and information is included on organizations that offer help. (JDM)
