AbstractThis document is comprised of the single 2001 issue of a journal highlighting notable after-school programs, many funded by 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, and the school-community collaboration they entail. Articles in this issue on literacy are: (1) "Literacy and Afterschool: A Perfect Fit," focusing on literacy programs for limited English speaking children; (2) "Department of Education Assistant Secretary Pushes Literacy," providing excerpts from an interview with Susan B. Neuman after being confirmed Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education; (3) "Literacy: The Centerpiece of Afterschool," describing a program offering homework help, recreational enrichment, and individualized reading programs; (4) "Community Schools Work with Families," describing the literacy activities of a community school; (5) "Middle School Initiative Targets Literacy," describing after-school programs at three middle school centers offering individualized reading help; and (6) "Literacy efforts Boost Scores, Morale," focusing on the impact of an after-school program concentrating on building literacy and mathematics skills and English as a second language.
