AbstractThis is the 22nd in a series of yearly updates of judicial decision summaries for case law related to elementary and secondary education issues. One can use previous and future editions to track decisions on appeal or to see trends in case law. With few exceptions, the cases were selected from court decisions found in federal and regional reporters from July 1, 1999, to June 30, 2000. Their selection was also based on their relevance to current issues in the public school setting, their definitiveness as articulations of law, and their dependability as consistent guides to policymaking and practice. As in previous issues, the cases are organized into eight chapters. These are school boards and board members, administrators, finance, teachers and other district employees, pupils, special education, religion, and tort liability. To make decisions with legal ramifications in mind, school officials must examine the rationales that guided the court's decision. However, the summaries are not intended as legal advice. Decisions vary from one jurisdiction to another, as well as being subject to revision. Altered facts, the jurisdiction's legal standards, and the scope of the jurisdiction affect interpretation. An explanation of the legal reference notes, a glossary of legal terms, and an index are provided. (AUTHOR/RKJ)
