| Abstract | Career academies are high school programs that frame academic learning around a career focus in order to increase student motivation and achievement. They generally have three defining features: a school-within-a-school structure, a college preparation curriculum with a career theme, and partnerships with employers, the community, and higher education. This handbook provides information on organizing and implementing an internship program in a high school career academy. The handbook includes six sections. Section 1 explains the background and purpose of internships, and section 2 provides information on organizing an internship program, including the role and responsibilities of the coordinator. Section 3 spells out student roles and responsibilities, and section 4 provides guidelines for employer roles and responsibilities. Section 5 considers the legal issues involved in an internship program, including labor laws for minors and hazardous occupations. Section 6 is an appendix that contains the following sample forms: (1) internship student application; (2) intern standards of conduct; (3) potential sites worksheet; (4) orientation checklist; (5) worksite learning plan; (6) guidelines for business and industry participants; (6) daily worksite log; (7) intern assessment form; (8) student internship evaluation; and (9) student self-evaluation. A list of six related Web sites and a bibliography containing six references are included in the handbook. (KC) |
