Abstract	Although informal care provided by relatives, friends, and neighbors is the oldest and most widespread form of child care, it received little attention from researchers or policymakers until the late 1980s. This report summarizes what available research says about informal child care and identifies significant gaps in knowledge. Information was obtained through published articles and reviews, research reports, and other literature. The report focuses on trends in the use of informal child care, characteristics of families using informal care, reasons for informal care use, costs of informal child care, descriptions of informal child care providers and their experiences, and the experiences of children and parents using informal child care. The report concludes by noting that a good deal is known about some aspects of informal child care providers, including the portion of the child care market they represent, the types of families using them and why, caregiver characteristics, and their reasons for providing child care. Fragmentary information is available on the relationships among providers and the parents and children they serve, the quality of the child care experience, and the kinds of help and information these providers might want and need. It seems likely that researchers will be unable to achieve a much more precise understanding of the issues involved, primarily because these child care providers are largely hidden and not anxious to participate in research studies. The final section contains abstracts of the 27 research reports on informal child care used for this report. Three appendices include a glossary, a discussion of methodological issues, and a listing of additional resources. (Contains 43 references.) (KB)
