| Abstract | Increases in delinquency and violence over the past decade are often rooted in a number of interrelated social problems that may originate within the family structure. The focus of this publication is the effectiveness of family intervention programs and chronicles one type of intervention, the Functional Family Therapy (FFT). FFT draws on a multisystemic perspective in its family-based prevention and intervention efforts. The program applies a comprehensive model with proven theory and empirically tested principles, plus a wealth of experience to the treatment of at-risk and delinquent youth. It sets forth the program's core principles, goals, and techniques, and reviews its research foundations. The community implementation of FFT is described, and an example of effective replication is provided. FFT has been implemented in various treatment contexts and with culturally diverse client populations. The success of FFT is due to its integration of a clear, comprehensive, and multisystemic clinical model with ongoing research on clinical process and outcomes. Thirty years of clinical research indicates that FFT can prevent the onset of delinquency and reduce recidivism at a financial and human cost well below that exacted by other more punitive approaches.
