AbstractThe assessment model described in this guide was initially developed by a team of fifth-grade teachers who wrote objectives of integrating social studies and language arts. It helps the teacher guide students to create a task-specific rubric that they use to evaluate their own and peers' work. Teachers review the student evaluations, determine the final grades, and give the evaluations back so that students can reflect on their own performance. The chapters are: (1) "Assessment of Performance Tasks"; (2) "Rubrics: General and Task-Specific"; (3) "Focus Questions To Guide Instruction and Assessment"; (4) "Choosing the Performance Task"; (5) "Teaching Students To Write Rubrics"; (6) "Writing a Rubric in the Intermediate Classroom"; (7) "Writing a Rubric in the Primary Classroom"; (8) "Assessing Student Work: Peer Assessment and Self-Assessment"; (9) "Teaching Intermediate Students To Assess"; (10) "Teaching Primary Students To Assess"; (11) "The Final Steps: From Self-Reflection to Parent Conference"; (12) "Benefits of the Model"; (13) "Frequently Asked Questions"; (14) "A Staff-Development Model"; and (15) "Sample Focus Questions, Performance Tasks, and Rubrics." Six blackline masters for use in the rubric process are attached. (Contains 36 figures.) (SLD)
