AbstractThis document summarizes the 48 responses from faculty and various groups and institutions to a block transfer discussion paper. The Block Transfer Project grew out of statements in Charting a New Course that assigned to the British Columbia (BC) Council on Admission and Transfer the responsibility for implementing a system of block transfer for the BC postsecondary system. The Council decided to launch an investigation into what block transfer might mean in the context of arts and science degrees, and to determine whether precedents for the application of block transfer principles in arts and sciences existed in other jurisdictions. Twenty-four respondents answered that block transfer should "supplement" the current course to course transfer system. Nineteen respondents preferred Descriptive Pathways model, and fifteen respondents indicated support for Flexible Pre-Major model. Twenty-two respondents indicated that legislation was either unthinkable or unworkable for implementing block transfer. One of the frequent themes that emerges from an examination of responses is that articulation committees perform a valuable function. Some of the underlying issues that are discernable in responses are as follows: faculty autonomy in the current structure of the transfer system; institutional autonomy versus system issues; and the evolution of the new receiving institutions. Appendices include a list of respondents and respondents corresponding to questions. (JA)
