Abstract | This paper proposes an Internet facility that will authentically provide laboratory experiments remotely. Such a facility is brought to the doors of the distance learner to help provide learning that is comparable to that offered for conventional students. The paper describes the development of a prototype remote laboratory system, including software, hardware, procedures, and instructional systems. This includes surveys of existing alternatives (mainly software simulation environments), a description of the prototype remote laboratory environment, and a discussion of development issues, such as the reasons behind Java and RMI (Remote Method Invocation) as the system's development tools over other popular alternatives.
