| Abstract | These classroom guides, designed to accompany the daily Cable News Network (CNN) Newsroom broadcasts for August 2-31, 1999, provide program rundowns, suggestions for class activities and discussion, links to relevant World Wide Web sites, and a list of related news terms. Top stories include: the drought and heatwave in the northeastern United States, British Beef and Mad Cow Disease, the Abraham Zapruder film, Asia floods and the Asian economic crisis, and appointment of Richard Holbrooke as ambassador to the United Nations (August 2-6); effects of the drought on Chesapeake Bay, political and regional turmoil in Russia, children and violence at schools, the solar eclipse, and preventing prejudice and hate crimes (August 9-13); the Iowa straw poll, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Russia's political climate, earthquake in Turkey, death toll and survivors of the earthquake in Turkey, and destruction in Turkey and development plans (August 16-20); Hurricane Bret, Turkey's earthquake survivors and problems in the relocation camps, interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve Board, Asia-Russia Summit, and probe into the Waco case (August 23-27); AIDS Conference, and violence in East Timor and the role of the United Nations in the referendum vote (August 30-31).
