| Abstract | This paper discusses the Theatre of the Absurd as a type of popular theater which can be used as a weapon of deconstruction and a tool for empowerment for marginalized social, economic, and political groups. It raises the issue of how institutions, most notably educational institutions, invoke rituals to enforce regimes of normalcy. The philosophical basis of the paper is the idea of ritual as foundation for power, which is incorporated into the paradigm of power-as-dance. The paper begins by discussing power in relationships between men and women, in situations of confession, in institutional normalization, and in the carrying out of ritual actions. The paper uses a short story by Anton Chekhov to illustrate power relationships. It continues by describing the place and function of popular theater in society and ritualization, and provides groundwork for exploration of uses of ritual as both a social control and a tool for social transformation.
