AbstractThis document, which contains information relevant to individuals planning their careers, employers, human resource planners, and training institutions, examines the skill needs of the South African labor market in 1998-2003. The preface presents a brief overview of the factors that have contributed to the high levels of unemployment and patterns of poor job creation that will likely persist in South Africa through 2003. The introduction describes two major sources of the data: (1) a survey that asked 273 randomly selected South African companies across 8 broad economic sectors about future labor market trends and their future work force needs; and (2) a mail survey in which 22,585 university graduates answered questions regarding their income, occupation, work status, employer, and years of work experience. The remaining 85% of the document consists of a series of tables, charts, and lists detailing future employment prospects and income projections for more than 200 occupations in the following 13 categories: professionals; engineers; engineering technologists and technicians; architecture; natural science; medical; health-related; educational; humanities; accountants, financial, and economic; art, sport, and entertainment; managers; and clerical, artisan, and semiskilled. (Thirty-nine tables/figures are included.) (MN)
