Abstract | This third edition is designed to be used as a primary source for traditional courses in group counseling. Providing a thorough discussion of the rationale for using group counseling, this book examines the differing approaches of each author to group counseling, outlines practical suggestions on the skills needed for effective facilitation of groups, and gives guidelines for forming a group and solutions to common problems experienced among groups. The following is provided: a detailed chronology of important dates and events in the area of group work; coverage of major theoretical approaches to group counseling; an examination of ethical issues in counseling; a comprehensive group protocol that offers an inside look into the statement-by-statement interaction of the group; and an updated child and adolescent section with an in-depth look at filial therapy. Chapter 10, "Group Counseling with Children and Adolescents," is of particular interest to school psychologists and counselors. Appendixes are: "A Primer of Group Counseling Terminology"; "Association for Specialists in Group Work: Professional Standards for the Training of Group Workers"; "Group Leader Competencies." An index is included. (Contains six figures and eight tables. Each chapter provides references.) (MKA) |
