AbstractOne result of the extraordinarily rapid pace of educational reform in recent decades has been public expectation of greater accountability for the more than $300 billion spent annually on schools. As reformers have sought better ways to utilize all resources, including instructional time, block scheduling has been developed as a more efficient way to organize class time. This guide was designed to: (1) help school leaders determine if block scheduling can improve their schools; and (2) provide instructions for implementing scheduling changes. The first five chapters define different types of block scheduling through the use of descriptions and illustrations of various scheduling models; potential problems are discussed and possible solutions suggested. Chapters 6-9 describe the implementation process and include steps for an effective plan of action (chapter 6), a discussion of priority decisions necessary to a successful transition (chapter 7), and information on possible barriers to implementation (chapter 8). Resource A (appendix) provides sample schedules from schools using different types of block schedules, including alternating blocks, modified blocks, and trimester plans. While most chapters conclude with short lists of references and suggested readings, Resource B (appendix) presents a 48-entry, selective bibliography on block scheduling. (MKW)
