Abstract | Recent developments have increased the need for both theoretical and practical dialogues concerning children's attention and activity levels. This book explores the complex issues and concerns in helping children with attention deficit disorder. The book is organized in three major sections. The first section describes current issues about children's attention and activity levels. The development of attention, medical diagnoses, educational assessment and current educational practices are described. The second section examines changing theoretical and applied perspectives, including the impact of teacher philosophy on classroom structure, as well as expectations and theoretical shifts in our understanding of children. The third section makes practical suggestions for dealing with attention and activity levels. Developmentally appropriate practice, specific strategies for working with students, and recommendations for working collaboratively with a wide variety of families are addressed. The book concludes with a look at possible directions these issues will take in the future. (JPB) |
