| Abstract | Contemporary communication technologies often produce opposite results: social isolation and increased connectedness, decentralized structures and centralized structures, special and unique identities and roles and also homogenized social identities, more complex socialization patterns and simpler socialization patterns, a more defensible personal space and a more permeable personal space, etc. This paper describes three paradoxical impacts and analyzes potential predictors of the impacts. The paper concludes that the social impacts of electronic communication technology (ECT) are as varied as the initial conditions prior to their use, reiterating that, in many instances, one type of social impact will exist along with an apparently opposite impact.
