| Abstract | This volume of data on higher education highlights trends over the past 20 years, with some data traced back to the 1930s. The data was obtained from both government and nongovernment sources, including especially the U.S. Department of Education, the Bureau of the Census, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Science Foundation, and is organized in four sections: (1) demographic and economic data (population, income, employment); (2) enrollment (in two-year and four-year institutions, by level of study, residence, and migration by state); (3) institutions and finance (current fund revenues and expenditures, institutional size and region, faculty and staff, and student data, including minority and gender distribution and costs); and (4) earned degrees (associate, Bachelor's, first-professional, Master's, and doctoral degrees, percentage of earned doctorates awarded to women by field of study, and degrees conferred in business and management). Each section is preceded by a highlights section and all data tables are accompanied by a chart or graph illustrating direction of change for the period covered. Two additional highlight sections provide demographic and economic, enrollment, and degrees earned data for minorities and women in higher education. A guide to sources is appended. (CH) |
