AbstractThe report details development, at Southwest Texas State University and later at Pennsylvania State University, of a computer authoring system ("Libra") enabling foreign language faculty to develop multimedia lessons focusing on listening comprehension. Staff at Southwest Texas State University first developed a Macintosh version of the system, then secured consultants to develop an IBM-compatible version. The authoring system and lessons initially created with it were tested, and 45 faculty from this and other institutions were trained in workshops to use the authoring system. Trainees developed lessons in Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. It is proposed that the system contains features central to students' acquisition of listening comprehension skills. Faculty trainees also found the system easy to use. Separate assessments of the instructional effectiveness of French, Spanish, and German lessons in controlled experimental conditions found them to be effective in improving student skills. It is concluded that while the project required greater effort and closer interinstitutional coordination of project activities, the results are successful and project-related efforts will be continued. Appended materials include a journal article about the authoring system and project director's comments. (MSE)
