Abstract | An evaluation of the foreign language programs of the Des Moines (Iowa) Public Schools is presented. It is divided into six ares: (1) Introduction; (2) Context Evaluation; (3) Input Evaluation; (4) Process Evaluation; (5) Product Evaluation; and (6) the Future. Sections include: a statement of program mission and philosophy; notes on the context of the evaluation (state policies, standards, and regulations, and national goals; program structure; enrollment highlights; status of a new two-way interactive audio and video system in the district; staffing needs and enrollment influences; reasons for which students should study languages; goals of foreign language study; program goals; and program development landmarks since 1985-86); program input (income, expenditures, instructional materials use and cycles, and equipment); process factors (work flow, inservice and staff development sessions, and professional meetings attended by language teachers); product factors (district French and Spanish test results; adherence to standards and regulations; awards and honors received in foreign languages; results of a high school senior survey; observations of the language arts supervisor; and program strengths and weaknesses); and plans for the future. Appended materials include data on foreign language enrollments and an equipment inventory. (MSE) |
