AbstractThis manual describes the procedures for planning and implementing a co-located or shared-site intergenerational day care program, based on the experiences of the Generations program in Columbus, Ohio. Part 1 of the manual defines co-located or shared site programs, provides a rationale for providing co-located child day care and adult day services, and suggests possible sites for such programs. Part 2 describes the Generations Program, a collaboration between a day program for older adults and younger adults who are physically or cognitively impaired, and a YWCA child care center. The adult program operated on the first floor of a shared building and the child care center operated on the second floor. The description includes program goals, the individual programs, and a summary of the findings of an evaluation of the intergenerational components of the programs. Part 3 outlines the development and implementation of an intergenerational program, including: (1) administration and management, design and construction, and fundraising; (2) staffing, including shared staffing, the intergenerational coordinator position, and recruitment and selection; (3) staff training, parent and family participation, and adult client and child orientation; (4) ongoing funding of the program; (5) specific design issues, such as program structure, and joint programming; (6) program evaluation; and (7) ideas for ensuring program success, noting the importance of the coordinator position and staff recognition. Appended are the coordinator position description, sample activities, evaluation materials, and resources. (KB)
