| Abstract | This collection of excerpts from essays, reports, judicial decisions, and the professional literature presents a survey of the issues concerning tenure in higher education and advances the case for retaining tenure as a means to guarantee academic freedom. Individual chapters include excerpts and commentary on the meaning of tenure, focusing on events at Rollins College in Florida in the 1930s and Bennington College in Vermont in the 1990s; the probationary period and sex discrimination; dismissal and due process in regard to tenured faculty, focusing on the case, "King versus University of Minnesota"; the economics of tenure; tenure and resource allocation, focusing on events at San Diego State University in California in the 1990s and the University of Puerto Rico in the 1970s; tenure and mandatory retirement; evaluation of tenured faculty; and recent criticisms of the tenure system.
