| Abstract | This paper argues that an inclusive notion of citizenship is impossible in the modern state, predicated as it is on an opposition between the public and private spheres of social life. Until that opposition is addressed in the lives of men and women, women's ambiguous relationship with citizenship and the state will continue. This paper explores some of the ways in which education perpetrates women's and girls' lack of citizenship status, in the context of the current revival of interest, in Australia and other countries, in citizenship education.
