Abstract	Focusing on contracts for chief executive officers (CEO's) at community colleges, this monograph describes basic elements and legal requirements of CEO contracts and reports findings from a national survey examining the characteristics of such contracts. Following introductory material, the first section provides general information on CEO contracts, highlighting basic contract elements and considerations related to compensation and evaluation and separation clauses. This section also includes a checklist of items upon which boards and potential CEO's should reach agreement. Next, results are provided from a survey of 617 CEO's nationwide, including data on benefits; the relationship between the type of institution (i.e., single campus, multi-campus, part of a multi-college district, or district office) and the comprehensiveness of the contract; the relationship between institution size and CEO characteristics to contract terms; and the interaction between benefits and salary. Next a legal perspective is presented on CEO contracts, reviewing issues related to mandatory arbitration agreements and obtaining releases from departing employees. A sample CEO employment agreement, an executive employment agreement, and a separation agreement and general release are then provided. Contains 20 references.
