Abstract | This publication describes the Love and Logic approach to working with students. The approach is designed to teach students to think for themselves; to raise the level of student responsibility; to prepare students to function effectively in a society filled with temptations, decisions, and consequences; and to put the teacher in control. The book is divided into 15 chapters distributed within 5 parts. Part 1, "How Does Love and Logic Work?" discusses the Love and Logic approach, myths and philosophies of discipline, and how perceptions affect behavior. In Part 2, "The Four Key Principles of Love and Logic," individual chapters describe the principles: the enhancement of self-concept, shared control, consequences with empathy, and shared thinking. Part 3, "Realities and Myths," looks at styles of teaching, legal considerations, implementing school discipline, and a case study of one high school's approach to Love and Logic. Part 4, "Classroom Solutions Through Love and Logic Interventions," outlines 19 specific techniques for classroom discipline. Part 5, "Love and Logic Experiments, Charts, and Tips," is an index to examples of Love and Logic experiments, charts, and tips as they appear in the previous chapters. Also included is an outline of concepts found in each chapter, followed by a list of research and readings which further elaborate each concept. (Contains 11 references.) (ND) |
