Abstract | This article discusses key issues of literacy that are important to both teachers and learners for understanding, and summarizes the function of literacy in three different groups: primary education, adult education, and communities with unwritten languages. The article investigates the scope of literacy, showing how this concept may be defined differently in different communities and challenging a number of assumptions and oversimplifications. The article is divided into the following sections: (1) literacy is not an absolute concept; (2) literacy is socially defined; (3) literacy is collaborative; (4) literacy needs imagination; (5) spoken and written language perform equally necessary functions; and (6) what we don't understand.
