AbstractThis study examined variables related to college predisposition among students of different ethnic groups who attended schools enrolling high percentages of minority students and high percentages of students participating in free or subsidized school lunch programs. It is based on a subset of data from the 1988 National Education Longitudinal Study, namely 739 African American, 727 Hispanic, 329 Anglo American, 120 Asian/Pacific Islander, and 62 Native American eighth graders. In the analysis of the overall eighth grade model, participation in school activities was significantly associated with background variables such as high family socioeconomic status, for example, and was itself a significant variable in modeling predisposition to attend college. However, in the aggregate model of eighth graders at high minority enrollment, high school lunch program participation schools, ethnicity was the only background variable significantly associated with school activities participation, and such participation proved to be insignificant in modeling college predisposition. Explained variance in college predisposition was highest for the model using data from eighth graders in general (50 percent) and lowest in the model using African American student data (21 percent).
