Abstract | This report, one of a series of nine studies examined key issues in education and training (E&T) and access to information among adults aged 50 in the United Kingdom. Various statistical sources, existing literature, and several small-scale field studies were used to examine current participation of older adults in formal and informal E&T, future demand for E&T, contributions and costs of E&T for older adults and barriers to E&T, and key policy issues and options. It was concluded that older adults' access to education has increased during the past decade but remains fragmentary and strongly affected by social class and educational background. It was further concluded that several factors will increase demand for E&T among older adults but that attitudinal, financial, transportation, and time constraints will remain barriers to older adults' participation in E&T. Several public policy options were identified: increasing spending on training of older workers, safeguarding/strengthening adult education provision by local authorities, supporting libraries as agents in effective provision of information/guidance to older adults, and considering an education entitlement for older adults.
