Abstract | The illustrated guide provides vocabulary for common classroom terminology in 15 languages: Arabic; Bengali; Chinese; Farsi; Haitian-Creole; Hindi; Italian; Korean; Polish; Russian; Serbo-Croatian; Spanish; Tagalog; Urdu; and Vietnamese. The languages are those most commonly spoken by immigrants to the United States. For each language there are four pages of illustrations labeled in the language (using alphabets and authentic alphabets, characters, and symbols), phonetically, and in English. All of the words and phrases and some additional ones are presented again in lists, organized by category, that follow the illustrated section. The illustrations are designed so that children can scan them to find the term(s) they wish to convey. The vocabulary refers to the classroom environment, teacher-child and peer interactions, body parts, playground activities, and parents and administrators. Some classroom uses for the materials are suggested. (MSE) |
