Abstract | This second edition of the "Mini-Digest" provides a pocket-sized compilation of statistical information covering the field of America education from kindergarten through graduate school and found in much greater detail in the "Digest of Education Statistics", "The Condition of Education", and "Youth Indicators". The statistical highlights provide a quantitative description of the current American education scene. Information is presented on (1) enrollment at elementary, secondary, and higher levels, including enrollment by race and ethnicity; (2) teachers and teacher characteristics; (3) educational outcomes (course-taking patterns, graduates, dropouts, literacy rates, completions, academic achievement, and college degrees); and (4) educational finance. Statistics reveal that in the fall of 1994 education was the primary occupation of about 72 million people. Included in this total are about 64.5 million students and about 3.7 million teachers, as well as about 4.2 million professional, administrative, and support staff. Thirty tables and 12 figures present statistical information. (SLD) |
