Abstract | Hands-on activities in this guide are designed to help preschool children (ages 3-5) understand that reducing, reusing, and recycling preserves natural resources and prolongs the life of landfills. Children sort, match and compare recyclable items and learn to separate some items by number and color. The 29 activities are divided into units that introduce the alphabet as well as recycling words and symbols. Children learn environmentally sound ideas and behaviors as appropriate social behaviors. There are creative ideas for reusing materials in craft projects, games, dramatic play, and pretend play. Each of 11 units includes goals, teacher background information, easy to follow directions, and suggestions for additional related activities. Most activities require minimal preparation time. In addition to teacher- directed activities, the guide includes songs, take-home recycling ideas, a 31-word glossary, and a list of 40 resources. A packet of supplementary materials accompanies the guide and includes posters (large posters not included here), a set of recycling labels, reproducible handouts, and craft ideas with instructions, props and patterns.
